In this era of political correctness gone wild, the last thing we need is more stuff we shouldn’t say or do at work. We’ve got enough to worry about. Well, if you don’t want more to worry about, pay attention.
There are some things that, if you say them in the workplace, you’re toast. This is nothing new. Just age-old, battle-tested truths. Uttering one of these phrases will, best case, make you look like a dope or a crybaby. Worst case, it’ll destroy your credibility or even get you fired.     more...

Essential Java resources For a Java Developer

Since its introduction to the programming community as a whole in 1995, the Java platform has evolved far beyond the "applets everywhere" vision that early Java pundits and evangelists imagined a Java world to be like. Instead, the Java world rose up to Swing, coalesced around servlets, rode that into J2EE, stumbled on EJB, sidestepped over to Spring and Hibernate, added generics and became more dynamic, then functionalized, and continues to grow in all sorts of interesting directions even as I write this.
Which leaves the Java programmer who didn't grow up along with the language somewhat overwhelmed.

These resources are not necessarily the most popular, most powerful, or most influential resources in the Java ecosystem — that list might be entirely different instead, these are the resources every up-and-coming Java developer should have in their browser, on their bookshelf, or on their calendar to attend. As with any kind of list of this sort, there is always room for reasonable debate as to what should be included that wasn't or what was included that shouldn't have been. more...

Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years

Researchers (Bloom (1985), Bryan & Harter (1899), Hayes (1989), Simmon & Chase (1973)) have shown it takes about ten years to develop expertise in any of a wide variety of areas, including chess playing, music composition, telegraph operation, painting, piano playing, swimming, tennis, and research in neuropsychology and topology. The key is deliberative practice: not just doing it again and again, but challenging yourself with a task that is just beyond your current ability, trying it, analyzing your performance while and after doing it, and correcting any mistakes. Then repeat. And repeat again. There appear to be no real shortcuts: even Mozart, who was a musical prodigy at age 4, took 13 more years before he began to produce world-class music. In another genre, the Beatles seemed to burst onto the scene with a string of #1 hits and an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. But they had been playing small clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg since 1957, and while they had mass appeal early on, their first great critical success, Sgt. Peppers, was released in 1967. Malcolm Gladwell reports that a study of students at the Berlin Academy of Music compared the top, middle, and bottom third of the class and asked them how much they had practiced:  more...

How is your memory? Do you have trouble recalling names, numbers, and other bits of information from your past? If so, you're not alone! Although I take pride in my ability to remember intricate details about one on one conversations, I'm a complete scatterbrain when it comes to recalling the details of a phone conversation. For some reason, when I can't see the person I'm talking too, I find it much more difficult to remember what was said. But, after reading an article on Stepcase Lifehack entitled 3 Tips to Improve Memory, I now think I know why my phone call memory just isn't up to par.  more...

Make a speaker for tablets and smartphones

For some of us owning a smartphone or tablet are expensive enough. So when these perfectly designed items then need additional extras you simply can’t afford to buy them. One of the main gripes I have is the awful external speakers. They work okay(ish) in a perfectly silent room however, the only way to get the volume you want is to plug in. I don’t always like wearing headphones, sometimes I like hearing what else is going on around so I would prefer to use external speakers.
If like me you would rather do this then a quick and cheap way to amplify the sound is to use a plastic cup. A bog standard plastic cup. It is really easy to cut a hole in the bottom of the cup t place over the speaker, and then tape it on.  more...

10 Words to Doomland

A CBS Money Watch story by Robert Pagliarini called “7 Deadly Words You Should Never Use If You Want a Better Life” prompted me to think about HR professionals and how the words they choose can land them in a place of no return—Doomland, I like to call it.
