The outlines of a massive solar thermal power plant—the largest ever—are starting to appear in the wilderness outside of Las Vegas. The $2.2 billion project, which is being built by Oakland, California-based BrightSource, stretches over 3,600 acres near Ivanpah, California. Researchers have created a new metallic material that they claim is the world's lightest solid material. With a density of just 0.9 mg/cm3 the material is around 100 times lighter than Styrofoam and lighter than the "multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) aerogel" - also dubbed "frozen smoke" - with a density of 4 mg/cm3 that we looked at earlier this year. Despite being 99.99 percent open volume, the new material boasts impressive strength and energy absorption, making it potentially useful for a range of applications.               more...

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have a powerful laser capable of reaching extraordinary temperatures. When they fired their high powered x-ray laser at a sample of aluminum it generated temperatures of 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit, that’s almost twice as hot as the Sun’s corona and over 300 times hotter than the surface of the Sun.      more...

After five years of R&D, San Francisco start-up Green Horizon has begun shipping a portable, self-sufficient emergency response system called the CSU (Central Service Unit). The CSU operates without any supporting infrastructure, providing communications, water, and power.
